After his retirement, the parishioners of St. Peter's Church, Bandra, his friends, admirers and well wishers, who were keen to continue his work formed the Fr. J.B. Fernandes Sacred Music Foundation in July 1999. It was created to promote traditional and classical sacred music, which was so dear to Fr. J.B. The knowledge warmed his heart and gave him a sense of fulfillment. He felt assured that his work in the field of sacred music would continue.
The NEWMAN CHOIR was born for the specific purpose of offering the people of Mumbai the rich blessing of listening to sacred choral music. It was for Fr. J.B. a priestly ministry, of proclaiming the Word of God through music and song and for the members of the choir an opportunity to participate in the Christian mission of witnessing Christ and His message.
Aims and Objectives of the Foundation
The Foundation's first programme
On 17th June 2001, the Foundation organized its first programme, "An Evening of Sacred Music" at St. Peter's Church, Bandra. Subsequently, similar programmes involving various choral groups from the city were presented in different churches. Fr. J.B. Fernandes peacefully passed away on 29th June 2002, having completed his grand and holy mission for the spiritual enrichment of all. The efforts of the Foundation to revive the Newman Choir finally bore fruit with its revival in August 2002.
Praise the Lord! I thank the Lord for this choir. I once attended their concert and was touched by their unity and the joy and peace that flowed through their music. I felt the Lord telling me to join this choir and today I am part of this group- praising and glorifying God.
